Interior Painting Cost per Square Foot
How painters price interior work per square foot, the difference between floor and wall square footage, and how to estimate a job with a per-foot rate.
"Per square foot" is the most common way to compare painting quotes, but it can mean two different things: square feet of floor or square feet of wall. Mixing them up can make a quote look twice as expensive or half as cheap.
Here's how per-square-foot pricing works and how to use it.
Floor area vs. wall area
- Floor area is the home's listed square footage. It's easy to know, but it ignores ceiling height and room shape.
- Wall area is the actual surface being painted. A 12×12 room has 144 sq ft of floor but about 350–380 sq ft of walls.
Typical rates (US, 2026)
- Roughly $1–$3 per sq ft of wall for walls only, labor and materials.
- Roughly $2–$6 per sq ft of floor for walls in a whole home, more with ceilings and trim.
These are ballpark ranges. Prep, ceiling height, color changes and local labor costs move them a lot.
Estimating a job with a per-foot rate
- Get the paintable wall (and ceiling) area from the paint calculator.
- Multiply by your local rate.
- Add extras that are priced separately: trim, doors, cabinets, wallpaper removal, major repairs.
Painters: pricing by wall area is fairer and easier to defend to a client. The Paint Calculator & Estimator app measures the walls, adds your labour and mark-up, and puts it all into a PDF quote.
